Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation

The Illinois Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LS-AMP) is one of several alliances funded by the National Science Foundation to increase the number of undergraduate students of African American, Latino, Alaskan Native, Native Pacific Islanders, or American Indian ancestry who are pursuing careers in the fields of mathematics, science, engineering, technology, and teacher education in these fields.

Illinois State University is one of several universities and colleges in a consortium of Illinois institutions that comprise the Illinois LS-AMP (Illinois Alliance for Minority Participation). The LS-AMP program is administered by the Julia N. Visor Academic Center’s Targeted Retention Services unit in collaboration with the Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology.

Services offered by LS-AMP:

  • Academic support and academic success monitoring
  • Tutorial Assistance
  • Computer/Study Lab
  • Study skills, presentation skills, and career workshops
  • Financial assistance for participation in faculty-supervised research projects
  • Participation in designated research conferences
  • A faculty mentorship program
  • Opportunities to network with faculty in the Science, Technology and Mathematics disciplines
  • A monetary award program based on academic performance and program participation

Program Enrollment Criteria

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Identified as African-American, Latino/a, Alaskan Native, American Indian or Native Pacific Islander
  • Currently a full-time Illinois State undergraduate student in academic good standing
  • Major or intent to in major in a science, mathematics, engineering or technology discipline and teacher education programs within these disciplines
