First Year LinC

The First Year Learning in Communities (LinC) Seminar is an 8-week one-credit course designed to assist students in their transition to the University and provide tools to help them succeed at Illinois State. Our focus remains on three major themes:

  1. assisting students in their transition to college;
  2. helping students identify majors and careers; and
  3. introducing students to opportunities for campus and community involvement. New assignments, activities, and discussions will be developed to further enhance the seminar's role in the American Democracy Project.

Registration for the seminar takes place when students attend Preview during the summer. The new freshman athletes will again participate this year.

Register for First Year LinC

First Year LinC is open to any incoming first year students, excluding Honors students (who participate in a similar program). When you attend Preview in the summer, your academic advisor will assist you in registering for First Year LinC.

First Year LinC will...

  • assist students in their transition to the university
  • provide individualized instruction in a small seminar
  • introduce students to the University and its resources
  • help students understand what it means to be civically engaged
  • help students explore potential majors and career goals
  • help students develop test taking strategies, critical thinking skills, and time management
