Choosing/Changing Your Major
Choosing a major may be one of the easiest decisions that you have ever made or it may be an overwhelming and stressful decision. At Illinois State University, we utilize numerous resources to help you choose a major(s). University College Academic Advising is available to any student who is undeclared/undecided or who plans to change majors. Tips for Choosing a Major
- Start early! You must declare a major by the time that you have earned 75 credit hours. If you are not declared in a major, you are subject to the terms and conditions of Illinois State’s 75 hour policy.
- Explore all of the major options. We encourage you to be proactive in choosing a major by utilizing as many resources as possible.
- Be knowledgeable about the application timelines. Most departments and schools accept applications during September and February. Check individual websites for specific information.
- Be knowledgeable about any coursework or grade point average that is required in order for you to be eligible to apply to your intended major.
- Schedule an appointment with your University College Academic Advisor!
When to Apply
Major applications are accepted by most schools and departments during February and September. Minor applications are generally accepted anytime but do vary by school or department.
